Some of the best MS-DOS standalone utilites that I have ever used, and still use are:
PKZIP: I actually bought the last official 6.04g version back in 1993.
It is today's standard for "zip" files, as is the standard CRC which it appends to the zip file.
NORTON UTILITIES: Stilll using most of the individual utilites from the Advanced Edition 4.5 of 1988. Tried newer versions including those after Norton sold out to Symantic, but didn't like them. They want you to live inside their menu shell.
OPT-TECH SORT: Incredibly reliable and extremely fast file sort with a mulitude of options, yet very simple to use. When I need to sort a file from within a QB program, I do a "shell" to this sort.

LIST: Can't live without this fabulous file list-to-screen program. Allows things like position at EOF, finding a string, displaying in hex, etc. You can also "shell" out to LIST from your program for a nice scrollable display of some text file. I have an older 1994 version, 9.0h.

I'll think of some others. Let me add a closing thought about the above utilities. In many years of using them, I have never had a problem with them. They're bullet-proof.
