Yup, man, seriously damaged. I tried the conversion a while back of one of my first s3m compositions and the evil Scream Tracker f ucked it all off (y'know, what happens if you trim 90% of the tail sample data of a cymbal? It sounds like a town fair!).
I guess it is possible to add s3m playing cabilities since it's basically the same. But the reason i chose to support variable channel mods and nothing else was becuase of size. As you might understand you don't want a mod player which takes up 40 kb. To me it seems like s3m and mod are indentical except for the orginal mod format only supporting 4 channels. But s3m even seems to be missing some of the effects mod has. It does on the other hand allow up to 99 samples and has more octavies. But all this seems like not all so important stuff. The major limitation of mod was the 4 channels. Which isn't the case here. Think you guys survive with only mod ?
No, no, in the end s3m support is more "standarized" in the PC scene than these enhanced mods. BTW, the s3m format supports all the effects (but using other nomenclature) used in mods, and also loads of other -very- useful effects and sample attributes. If you can modify your sound engine to support s3m instead of mod without too much hassle, then go for it. It's far better. But if you think that's too much trouble for so little reward... well, stick with mods.

I examined further MPT to find that the proggie is capable of making conversions between all the supported formats. I got some free time today, so I tried to perform a conversion s3m -> mod. Besides sample limitation (31 vs 99), lack of sample frequency adjustment, volume control (for mods the volume of a sample is effect, not attribute) and all my favorite effects -I mean... no retrigger??? DAMN!- I managed to make a 16-chan mod, with a max of about 14 channels at once. Not too bad, but sounds worse than the original s3m...

Works fine on MPT, not so fine on Winamp. Uses vibrato in some parts, though, but if that gives you trouble you can remove that easily with MPT. I hope that this thingo helps you a bit.

PD1: Now that I've played with ProTracker, ST3, FT2, IT, MPT and Velvet Studio, I can say my opinion with some fundament: Impulse Tracker reigns supreme over every tracker in existence. Just M.H.O.
PD2: Again... mods can't support note retriggering! AAAAAAGH!!!
PD3: The Hitman 2 OST is pure sonic bliss. 8)
