Ever been to one?

I really really super duper wish I had. I see them on TechTv and once on Dave Attell, and I hear about them all over the place, but NEVER have I been to one Sad... They look so much fun! Especially if it's a Halo LAN party for XBox Wink but I never knew anyone at school who was into the games I was... All the "cool kids" at my schools were all really stupid, all the nerds were REALLY annoying, and everyone else just did drugs all the time.
I've hosted 3 and been to 2 other ones.

Ironically, when I was in high school, all the "cool kids" (jocks) were hooked on Halo and had XBox lan parties frequently...although my friend did have to help them set it up, because none of them could crimp cable to save their lives...

Halo LAN parties are the best. especially when you get 16 people going! oh man, I just can't even begin to describe the level of fun there is at one of those parties. your definetely missing out. you should definetely go to one Big Grin
Never hosted one, but I've been to a few. One thing I've learned is that getting the various versions and configurations of Windows to network, and getting everything set up will take far more time than you might anticipate.

My advice would be to get as many people as possible to drop off their computers the day before, or at least come early with it so that whoever is most knowledgable about Windows networking can set them up beforehand. Otherwise, people get bored/impatient and in the case of overnight lan parties, fall asleep.

Which brings me to my second peice of advice: don't do overnighters, because in my experience too many people fall asleep - especially if there are delays. Those who were prepared to stay up the whole night get left with nobody to play with at the end of the night. Instead, start in the morning and plan all/most of the day/weekend - they'll probably stay longer than the would have been able to stay up at an overnighter.

Or alternatively, there are places that have computers already set up for network gaming with games preinstalled etc. You could probably just drop in and play with whoever's there. But I have no idea what their rates are like or if they let you bring your own games.
I think he was talking about xbox lan parties. those are no hastle at all. you just bring your xbox + ethernet cord (or whatever that little dohikie is) and plug in. then your all set. but i can see how computer lan parties can be a huge hastle...
My flat has two machines on our Lan with a hub so we can plug friends machines in when they come over. We have done small parties of about 4-6 people.

I went to a Quake-2 competition once where they had 75 players (I went to watch). One of the server machines was used as a spectator and had a movie projecter connected to it. For a laugh they played on one of the bigger levels and lined up about 50-60 odd players and railgunned the lot of them, it crashed a couple of the lower end computers instantly because of the number of gibs that got generated.

Oh, in that case... why not start (or join) an XBOX gamers club at your school? That would probably be the easiest was to find fellow XBOX owners who might be interested in a lan party.
