on my gramdma's comp she's got XP and i put QB 4.5 on it. this comp is 2.4Ghz with 512Mb. when i run qb it runs as C:\WINNT\system32\ntvdm.exe and takes about 99% of system resorces. WTF? i know XP emulates dos but this is rediculas.
Set the idle slidebar in some of the tabs that appear when viewing the properties of QB.EXE.
...what? i got the properties, but what thing do i need to change
There is a slide-bar on some tab (the last I think) called 'Idle-Bar'. Here you can adjust how many computer resources (CPU power, etc) are assigned to QB.EXE.
well now it's down to 45%
Adjust it so that you have enough resources left to work on other things. Wink
i set all the memory modes to auto and the idlel setting is at max. i dont know much about XP, except that it really sucks. i got 33 programs running in back groung.. really what the crap is that all for? i dont know. this comp is 2.4Ghz!! it runs like a 233Mhz runing NT!

I suppose you haven't got 33 programs running in background... but 33 processes. That's normal. Don't worry. What it's for? Well, it are system-devices like Explorer.exe, SVHOST.EXE, etc.

When you run QB.EXE I suppose. Not when you don't... Wink At least... it does so on my 2 GHz WinXP machine Smile
Diroga, if you can list the processes that are running, i can help you disable some of the services that arent necessary. I have my laptop with xp booting up with only 14 processes. Smile I also found that when QB.exe would run, it would make one of the svchost.exe go up to 100%. However Neo, i will try your idea next time i run qb Wink
I think (from self experience) that Windows XP is the windows version that sucks less (it still sucks, but way less than 9X or 2K). I don't have a single hang up since I installed it. My computer used to get bloated with windows 9X after ~6 hours of use and sometimes I had to run a RAM utility to get rid of unfreed RAM or even I had to reboot. Windows XP never gets bloated and if it gets you only have to close the programs to take it to its original state.
