Is it a good Major, and jobs out there for it?
Yep.

Of course, depending on what you major in.
Exactly what Im considering taking... anyone any ideas? Is it a good idea and are there any good jobs related to it?

My advice is to study something you are interested in, not something that you think will get you a good job with high pay. The career path you choose now could well be the one you are going to spend the 40-50 years of your life doing.

The biggest area of jobs available to computer scientists is software engineering. Software engineers develop all sorts of different software from the embedded market (cell phones, etc), office products to specialised software for specific business needs. IMHO software engineering is insanely boring, working on the same piece of software day in day out for several months/years doesn't appeal to me at all. One of the guys in my office at uni graduated and went out to develop software for use in NZ prisons, he got bored of it within 2 years and is now back doing his Masters so he can do something more interesting.

Other areas computer science can lead to are hardware design (cpus, graphic cards etc), software design (languages, operating systems, etc), experimental computer science (comparing software/algorithms) and other things like digital rights management (copy protecting cds and dvds, shudder).
40-50 years? Wow, you NZers sure have sort life spans... Tongue
I just can't wait to get into some official computer training that doesn't simply say that Recursion is your best friend, and Bubble Sorts will do.
Hey, Aga, pass the quicksorts.
What?????? Zack.... when do you intend on retiring? when you're 90? You dont keep working until you die, you know.... you generally retire...
Rhiannon's grandfather is 80+ years old and is as active today as he was when he was 20.
Yeah...my grandmother is almost 70, and she works...she's very active. About as active as she was when she was 20. Big Grin
Is a degree in CS hard to get since you have to take all those MATH  classes.
Aww crap. I *hate* maths...
