Why?

Because I have one, and I have to do most of my works on it (including QB programming, and possibly HTML editing).

It is a 33Mhz computer with eight 1Mb SBSIM memory modules so installing a Win95 - NO!!! It runs on DOS and Win 3.1.

The problem is that I can not find anything good for it. I found WinSite, but most of the programs are shareware there including 10 years old ones. They should have released as abadonware now, but where they are...

So if anyone knows something good for it, please write! Smile

I just filled three floppies with garbage: There were only two useful programs in those i downloaded (they were 500Kb in size).

The biggest problem is now that i can not smooth - resize images. I had almost everything for image manipulation already, but all of those programs simply cut off the unnecessary pixels when resizing what is really awful.

So please give me an image manipulation program (DOS or Win 3.1) what is able to do this if you know any! You will help me much!
Well, there's a program called Calmira that makes Windows 3.1 looks like Windows 95...I don't know if it will run in standard mode though.

For DOS file managers, I like XTree Gold. Once you know the keyboard commands it becomes very fast and easy to use.

Direct Access 5.1 is a nice menu system that lets you quickly launch your programs without starting Windows. You can automate tasks with the scripting language in it as well.

For word processing, you can download Word 5.5 for DOS free from Microsoft. Smile
Neopaint. or Dpaint. Both are excellent imaging editing tools for dos, and are probably as good tools youll find. I dont know any for Win32. The neopaint download has a nag, but it still functions perfectly, although that may have changed in recent revisions (i know the removed the copy/paste recently)
Norton Commander, best one ever.
Nesticle!!!!
Thanks for the ideas, I will try them.

I have got NC5, Dos 6.22, Win 3.1, Aranche (web browser), RAR - these are the most importants. As I said the biggest problem is the resizing of the images. I could find programs what can do everything with the palette, can blur, or do other things with the images, but none of them can resize them smoothly.

Why not? I installed an ran Win95 (A, first release) on a 386 25MHz SX with 4M of RAM. I can understand not running on -that-.

Calmira needs the Win32s patch (I have it installed in a VM).

As to image editing software, your SOL in Win3. All the good stuff requires Win4/5 (9x/NT).

Well, that's not totally tue, there is *some* good DOS image editors, but they are very limited by todays standard.

You can try to find 'Splash!' or 'Story Board'. They were pretty good, but as I said, limited compared to what you can do today.
For image converting and processing I always used DISPLAY in my old 486. It is a 32 bits MSDOS application really well featured. It works in text mode and menu-guided, but it is the most powerful DOS app I've ever seen. It also works as an image archiver/browser/thumbnailer/slide-shower, just like Thumbs Plus or ACDSee but for DOS and really neat. Supports more than 40 image formats, and some video formats (MPEG1, some AVIs).

I've uploaded it for you as it is somewhat hard to find these days: http://imaginatica.us.es/~wopr2k/nathan/display.zip
I think I found out how to resize those images smoothly +
I have got a description on the BMP format =
I think I will be able to write a program myself for it Smile

The others: i HATE Microsoft Word, and if i have to use a word processor, i edit HTML instead of it... That is a more easy way Smile

I would like to equip my computer with freewares or abandonwares. I do not really like sharewares...

Beyond the image resizer I would really like to get a command line background MIDI player, or a Windows one which I can use to listen to MIDIs during doing something. I would like to get a MIDI composer too, but i could not find any yet what i can use on that computer. I tried out Midget already, but i could not set it up to hear anything (I know about those MIDI ports, i know my sound card's one too, but when i set, it does not work. Then i tried all of the others, but none of them made sound...).

I do not need HTML editors, i could use none of them when i tried to do. I always make my HTMLs in Notepad, or in something else if they become too big. I may only need a good Win 3.1 browser what is able to handle JavaScripts, but I think I will be able to get this one as I read somewhere that MsIE 5.0 has a 16 bit version. But one from the Netscape group would be good too.

Finally thanks again for your efforts to help such an outdated person like me
(I would use a better computer if i had one. But the better one we have is next to the TV what is not the ideal place for serious working...)

Na_th_an: Thanks for it, i will try. Anyway if i found out how to resize i will create my own routines too Smile
