After just about two weeks of *such* painstakingly hard work and then some, the QuickBASIC Caliber Programming Compo 2004/2005 is right back on, with some MAJOR changes to its Official Entry Rules to allow even more new stuff in my compo in order to shatter open the doors of positive originality ever more. Much MUCH better, Adigun. I applaud your revisions for the most part. However, I do notice that your rule #11 is still a bit off-kilter. While I certainly don't see any real problems with disallowing bloodletting (kids do play these games too), you're still being narrow-minded with disallowing tried-and-true ancient sciences (astrology, tarot, etc. are very legimate sciences and can form the basis for some very excellent and UNIQUE games...anyone ever played Mesopotamia [known as Somer Assault in America]?). In addition, your rule #6 hasn't really changed much and is very ambiguous, whereas before it was just plain biased and ignorant. But at least it's a step in the right direction. Let me see if I understand this correctly...a game based strictly around wizards, evil island gods, and the like is disqualified but a game which instead incorporates these as well as other entities is acceptable? If that's the case, I might even join this compo. Finally, your rule #5 is also ambiguous and heavily open to interpretation. Let's not forget that this is you, AAP, a "very sensitive 27-year-old man" who is disturbed by the slightest thing. 99% of the Qmunity isn't going to be offended or even think twice about the things that bother you, so I highly suggest backing off from this one or you're going to find yourself with another failed compo.

Now for some humor...

Your rule #8, while seemingly valid, goes good up until the end. There is no way in hell anyone's going to delete their hard work just because you said so. Delete this stipulation from your rules at once if you want to be taken seriously, because people do NOT like to be told such things. Your rule #7 is just plain silly and stupid and should be removed, as the possibilities of this happening are quite slim anyways. Oh, and a detail about rule #6...dragons...are any forms of dragons considered "bad"? After all, the original dragon as depicted by the Chinese was more of a wingless serpent...it was only after the dragon myths had fallen into Christian hands that the dragon was converted to a serpentine creature with batlike wings. Are both types of dragons acceptable?

Your rule #3 is a given. I agree with rules #9, 10, and 14. Rule #12 is stupid and should be removed for reasons we all discussed a long time ago. And while I certainly do not agree with rule #13, it's acceptable if you want to limit the genres of games in your compo. And by the way...there is no such thing as a living spirit. A spirit is noncorporeal and has no actual life force.

I am still wondering why the excessive prohibition of sexual stuff...you spend more time telling people to specifically avoid sexual stuff than anything else. Why is that? Is it so hard to write "No sexual stuff, period" or whatever, rather than going into very specific details that will ultimately give the young kids crazy ideas that will pervert their minds far more than if you had just said "no sexual stuff"?

One final note...while it may be a good idea to limit people to one category, you might find that it can also be a deterrent. Limiting people to one category will limit your number of entries, and can easily make this compo, like all your other compos, fail miserably.

You're learning, Adigun. Slowly but surely, you're learning. And for that, I give you a bit of respect. You're starting to learn what the people want. That's what it takes to be a true success.

AAP, I am cool with those rules. great work!

I have one more suggestion for your posts/writing, you shouldn't use too many adjectives and repititive phrases. Its kinda...erm...boring :wink:.

For example:

I agree completely. His writing style is very difficult to understand due to his...erm.....nontraditional use of grammar. I can understand most of it because I'm used to reading people's butchered English here in PR and because it's my first language. But someone whose first language isn't English may have a much harder time trying to decrypt thru the wordiness. Like I had offered to you before AAP, I'll be glad to go thru your rules and chop off the wordiness. I guarantee people will understand them 200% better. Like tbbq said, it really does get boring.

I had a few questions about your rules. For example, rule #4. Neo had submitted his library in the compo. Does that mean no one can use it anymore?

Also rule #21 seems to be a little restrictive. It seems you want to control the distribution of a work you did not make, a right which belongs to the author only. I dont know about you, but I wouldnt like being told how to distribute my own work.

Other than that, yea the rules seem to be getting less restrictive. I think if you stop trying to be overly controling in your compo, people will be much more willing to join. But good start.

Nontraditional? I'd call it more of "grammar raping", but that's just me. :lol: I think it's an attempt to be eloquent, but in order to be eloquent, you have to actually use proper grammar...

Telling from your replies, that absolutely shows me that while I am not perfect myself, at least I am improving indeed, so THANKS A LOT, people!! !

And Rhiannon, about rule #4, on Neo sending his library in, given that the category that he has selected has no less than allowed him to do so, that is absolutely OK. Another thing now, I want to make it rather clear to you that according to that rule, while it does say that you are not allowed to create any material that is either ripped or used from other games/projects that are presented in my current compo (in this case, the QBCPC 2004/2005), it simply *does not* say that you are not allowed to send in your own QB libraries, even after Neo has sent his. That is most true, but only in certain categories where YOU ARE ALLOWED to create your own QB libraries. ;*) ! As well, I am pretty apt to customizing and improving my writing style (and it has improved significantly since near the beginning of the year, too! :wtnod: ), and I do not have to use a “Period, end of the conversation” phrase for just every certain sentence in order for me to get my point across, so I am going to go with you and TheBigBasicQ both on this one. ^_- !!

And as for rule #21, the honest reason I have placed that rule up there is not to get restrictive or anything, but rather I am planning to use this rule as an “integrity check” of sorts to make sure your official project follows ALL of my new rules, without cutting *any* corners whatsoever. No more, no less. I am not after controlling other people’s projects on that, Rhiannon, much less in a dominating way at all, as I just want to thoroughly check their projects only before I even give them permission to distribute it (whether through QBasicNews.com, URL, or otherwise at all). That is all I am saying. ! It is their own work indeed on their own projects, not mine.

Oh pardon me, I didn’t know that. ^_^o If that is what you are asking, well I got some EXCELLENT news for you: you are DEFINITELY ALLOWED to use Neo’s own lib (NeoLib 1.6) — or for that matter, any other QB lib that was created for any QBCPC at all — as part of your project creation, because to be clearly specific here, there is nothing in rule #4 that says that you are not allowed to do so. And that is that! !!

I may enter if you would be so kind as to clear up the ambiguity of rule #6, as I had stated in my initial post in this thread?

To Adosorken:

I would be *most* glad to clear the complications up for you on rule #6 of my QBCPC 2004/2005 Official Entry Rules. Follow me and learn something now.

Let me explain pronto. To the best of my knowledge, as according to rule #6, if you were to use the word “wizard” as if only to mean “Expert” or “Master”, and not as a practitioner of magic, then that becomes 100% OK and acceptable in my compo. :wtnod: An acceptable example of it is a phrase that says: “WOW!! You must be a such an arcade game wizard, scoring over 500 million points on that DoDonPachi machine!!”. !

And, if I remember in the dictionary correctly, man, apparently, the words “witchcraft” and “sorcery” simply mean the usual use of magic for evil purposes, and the words “sorcerer”, “sorceress”, and “witch” simply mean male and female practitioners of magic, used usually for evil purposes. And that is why I do not trust that kind of stuff being in my compo (much less do I even allow it, too), because, that tends to detract from something positive overall about my compo, in a way. Sorry about that.

As for halloween-based material, please remember that the reason why it is *clearly* not allowed in my compos is because, to be obvious (and sad to say, this is still true even today!), that tends to scare off and even frighten away at least some people viewing the projects that have that up there, as that kind of material tends to both create something needlessly inappropriate for at least some people and even help create an overall since and atmosphere of negativity and loss. I have been there, and know well enough that that doesn’t bring anything positive out of that. Ever.

And also, since the words “vampire” and “vampiress” tend to mean male and female undead-like beings that bite even the necks of victims and drink away their blood, even while the victim is asleep, too, I do not even trust them being in my compo at all either, nor do I even allow them too. You know why? Because it just tends to frighten off and even offend some other people and even give others some unwanted nightmares, as that kind of stuff presents something inappropriate (and even horrifying) to some. Look honestly now, there are millions after countless millions of people, just like you and me. And even entirely, they all have certain different tastes and different likes and dislikes just like the both of us do. You know how it is.

On my QuickBASIC Caliber Programming Compo, the possibilities for positive originalities have recently been broadened now, and we are aiming for a kind of originality that is fresh and positive, not negative. You understand me now, Adosorken?

On the guaranteed positive side, you are clearly and *ABSOLUTELY ALLOWED* plenty of other beings in your project of my compo (including even NEW ones that was _absolutely_ forbidden from my previous compos, too!). Dragons, gryphons, any type of your own original animésque fantasy-based human-like/imaginative beings, leprechauns, catgirls, mermaids, centaurs, YOU NAME IT ON THAT HERE, YOU ARE SO WELCOME TO IT!! ^_- !! Simple as that, Adosorken. Simple as that.
