vidieo mode is a characteristic of the particular video mode. The guy who built the video hardware decides what that characteristic is. We mortals don't. If you mean, "how do I get a video mode with the same 640 by 480 resolution as mode 12 but with more colors?", you can use VESA mode 101 (and your own or others code to "drive" it).
