I'm installing Fedora for a web server, but the installer crashes. My CD's are good (ISO's had the right MD5, and the the installer deemed them 'good'), but while I'm installing packages, the installer freezes or the install process stops - mouse still moves. I'm currently blaming the BIOS at this time - due to the fact that it also froze a lot under WIN95. Anyone have an idea on what's wrong?
Bad memory? Check the memory timings in the BIOS. Or simply check your memory.

Random crashes are often due to bad memory timings. I have "broken" many computers at college just changing the timing settings (quoted "broken" 'cause to fix them you just have to change'em back Wink)
eno_no: is your cdrom ok? because even though Linux mediacheck 'deems' your ISOs fit for installation, an old cd-rom(meaning whose lens hasn't been cleaned) can muck up the installation. What do your install logs show? check 'em out. It must've dumped logs in your /dev/hda1 or whatever partition you have on your system. They are very helpful for finding out the problem
Hmm...I never changed the memory timings - I'll look into it. What should I set 'em too?
I'll try the CD-ROM as well.
Thanks!
How's it coming along, eno_on? BTW, http://linuxquestions.org has a good forum for getting help. It has a dedicated area just for the fedora distro. You might what to ask around there for help.

I bought a Linux Magazine which came with Fedora CD's. Going to try to install it this week. Hope it doesn't crash for me. I think my memory is good (if memory serves me correctly).

It ended up working - my secret - use text mode! I just didn't have enough memory to do it in graphical mode (64MB), so a minimal install in text mode worked wonders. It had all I needed (I didn't put GCC on, so I saved a bit of time) for a server. Maybe I'll do a workstation install on a comp that's a lot better in a few weeks.
