Well... define intelligence...

Dolphins are intelligent.. yet i dont see them create much stuff...

Cats are intelligent, and so are dogs...

Spiders are extremely intelligent according to recent science...

Yet, we consider them all to be dumb... Intelligence is just evolution, evolution drives us into stuff..

Simply put, the human mind is a random generator:
If randomnum = 0 Then TryThis
If randomnum = 1 Then TryThisInstead

And then:
If triedstuff = Fail And IGot = Hurt Then Don't try again

Etc etc etc etc etc....

Sounds like you are confusing intelligence with instinct. A robot can be programmed to act in intelligent ways but that does not make it intelligent. Think of the instinct of animals as an extremely strong AI.
I was talking about human intelligence, not about intelligence in general.
Quote:Nope. Intelligence is more than that. You need senses, memory, sensitivity, creative abilities and lots of more stuff.

Ah right. Didnt think about that stuff. Good point.
Intelligence can be defined as being self aware. Animals have a basic survival instinct, but I don't think that they realize that death is inevitable. On the other hand, humans do realize their own mortality. We all know that we will die someday. I think that fact alone makes a certain thing in our brains click, giving us a step higher than just plain old self awareness.

I also think it's possible to make a computer self aware. It would take a tremendous amount of code, memory and hardware, but I do believe that it's possible. After all, these things are thinking machines. Wink

One more thing...
If/when someone figures out how to do it, I doubt they'll be coding it in QB!

Not only are we self-aware, but we are aware of our own awareness. Psychologically, metacognition is very advantageous.

There are several theories concerning what "thought" is from a scientific (as opposed to a philosophical) standpoint. Try reading _Shadows of the Mind_ to get a few of them.

How would we know whether or not a computer is self-aware?

</ot>
I think a program is aware of its self when it can function without human input even to the xtent of changing its own code or even language. The only problem is that it can not create its own purpose, that is what we must do, thus I do not think that until more knowledge about the brain and how it functions. Without a purpose there is no reason for it to do anything, We have to first figure out what our purpose is, what drives us to do stuff, what makes us for example want to program, its because we like it, what do we like about that makes it fun, what cause us to like those things, were does that feeling come form.

As you might notice this is a very confusing topic.

I watched a tv show the other day. It was about a compitition to see who could make the best robot to go over a disaster site. The robot had to act on its own and find survivours and dangers, such as fire chemicals.
It may apear that the robot has a mind of its own. It does not it is just following pre programmed responses, such as see fire, check heat, stay away, add to map.

My thought on the matter is that we are looking at it in the wrong way and there is special key to solve it. But this issue may become very contrvsual, as it could be said we are allready pre programmed by God. If this is true then a robot that has a mind of its own is impossible and never able to be reached.
Oh great...another "God" freak. Sad
The human brain is a machine. When we have enough knowledge we'll be able to emulate it.
and FYI, according to discovery, currently we can emulate a single neuron using one of the most powerful supercomputers. Lets wait until we can emulate 10billion of them Big Grin
