well, it would seem that earlier today, disney layed off 28 of the 35 lead base animators, making it impossible for anybody with any SKILL to get a job at disney.

they claim that they don't need animators anymore, everything they do is through computers and few base sketches and animation cels. they CLAIM that the future is now and they are going to embrace it.

This whole turnabout came when William Eisner, the president of WaltDisney, retired against his own will. Eisner was smart, he tried to keep things like the old way (who here doesn't remember Balto, The Lion King, Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, so on and so forth). He was shunned for it though, a bunch of geeks took over disney and are making it this artificial peice of crap.

the dream is over boys, we can all go home and sleep easy knowing that the magic we grew up on, will be destroyed by a false world of buldgy 3D models.

My Thoughts: My dream of being an animator will never come true, so i guess i'll just stick with graphic novels. and i hope the next president of disney will see things the old way, the better way.

Your thoughts:
???
It's a sign of the times, and a sign of Disney's lust for further wealth. I've been saying for years that Disney has been riding one cash cow after the other, and I've yet to be proven wrong. I guess this is just another brick in the wall.

There are other places to work as an animator, you know.
Hell, you could even be ambitious (can be a very helpful thing) and try to start you own company in the future.
But then again, in 'the future' the whole catch 22 thing of getting anywhere with a new business/etc will probably have increased... Alot... :-?
personally i liked the 2d animations more than the 3d stuff. But today's kids hardly have seen 2d animations. So I kinda agree with Disney's move :x
Well, my sister's with ya, mech, she used to love disney until they started making all the 'straight-to-video sequels' .... TARZAN 2, LION KING 1 1/2, ... so forth. Yeah, Disney is corrupt, there's no doubt about it... you should create your OWN animation company and kick arese like Pixar, yo.

definitely
Lion King was 2d and it rocked my socks.
The Iron Giant used computer only for frame editing -- the cels were still drawn and then -scanned- in.
Movies like Finding Nemo were overrated, just because they're 3d. 3d doesn't mean good T^T stupid geeks.
Well, I miss the good old 2D days too, and I wish they'd still do some of those animated movies that I'll remember, like Lion King and Aladdin, but for now, I think Disney should take a break from 2D. After Treasure Planet, which has no real reason for even existing, I pretty much figured Disney either needed a break, or needed to just stop. The people who did Sinbad, which came out around the same time, I think, did a better job.

But hopefully, this won't be the end of 2D animated movies from Disney. Don't get me wrong, I love 3D. I just saw The Incredibles last night, and it's one of the greatest movies I've seen, but 2D's something that it just wouldn't be right without.
The guy who MADE aladdin and lion king disney quit a few years back because the president refused to promote him to a position he had promised him when it became vacant (the guy died in a plane crash or something).

After the guy quit and went to dreamworks disney started making shit films and only stayed alive because of their deal with PIXAR, which has no ended i think, and the only thing holding them down was the presidents ego. He didn't bring us the lion king, he just made money off it.

The move against him was orchestrated by the only member of the disney family still on the... board of directors or some shite like that. He did this back in the 80's when disney was failing and surviving only on video sales, and brought in the guy who made aladdin and lion king.

I read all that in a newspaper - so be prepared for exageration etc.

But if it's true, it sounds like we're probably closer to a disney revival then disney selling out.

The Iron Giant was animated, and wasn't a Disney production.

But it probably is the best example out there of mixing tradition hand-drawn animation with computer animation. While it makes for a cheap cartoon, it's still pretty oogly.

Ironically, some of the best CG/traditional animation are the earliest examples, when 3d graphics were hack but not a novelty, and they traced over wireframe models to help with perspective and rotation. But even still, every animated disney feature since "the rescuers 2" has been painted on a computer, so it's not like this is an uncanny leap from Mom and Dad's cartoon studio.

I enjoyed some of the newer 3d movies, simply because they aren't just 3d, they're 3d done very, very well. Because they have a budget it makes them the finest showcase for computer animation, and many of them feature enough wit in the dialogue and plot to entertain an adult (usually aimed at parents and the occasional unenthused date), so that I could sit through and enjoy it. It's not liking 3d movies for the fact that they're 3d, that's just where the talent is right now.
