I bought an old PC, a Pentium 120. Right now I only could gather 32 Mb of RAM, so I need to get advice about how to make my Windows 98 the most lightweight thing possible Tongue

I'd like to know if you tried different shells and stuff.

I need MSN messenger, and a shell replacement by the moment. I've tried aMSN and Gaim, but they eat memory and resources (even more than MSN Messenger).

Any ideas?
EasyMessage. THe whole program's 250kb and it has AIM, MSN, ICQ and Yahoo

98lite with the Windows 95 shell works great.
Thanks both Smile the IM proggie works like a charm and I'm now doing a fresh install with 98lite (glad I still have my 98 and 95 CDs Wink) 'cause I screwed it all being a stupid last night Wink. Thanks very much.

I'm now looking for a non-bloating antivirus. My faves (McAfee and Norton) take up so much. I'll research a bit.

Thanks again Smile
Can't help you there. Your faves are the oligopoly.
AVG's pretty good, not as resource intensive as Norton.
wqhat type of mother board is it? i have old ram if you need more. try overclocking it. you might be able to get it to 175 or 233!
Yup, that's my next step Smile direct to the mobo jumpers Wink

Thanks for your offer, but the shipping costs would be more than the money I'd have to pay here to get such kind of memory Smile

This mobo takes SIMM, SIMM EDO and DIMM.

as a web browser, it's much lighter than ie or firefox. If you look in the forum, there's a new beta version being tested based on the latest mozilla framework.
Hey Nathan, that computer sounds like the thing i have sitting just a room away from me! Same stats, anyway.

Sorry, I'm afraid I can't really help you there... All i really did was defrag the hard drive, got rid of unnecessary programs, got rid of unnecessary programs from startup, searched for adware, vira and cleaned the registry: standard computer cleaning imo.

Yeah, any tips on possibly making a computer like this running faster? I cleaned up my pc fairly well, but it still lags quite a bit just opening my computer.

ever tried webroot's spysweeper? I find it's an excellent program that offers a multitude of excellent services. I think it's trial though... and it's not an antivirus program either.

Another good thing to get would be the zone alarm security suite. I don't know how bit it is, but from what i hear, it's about as good as norton's suite.
