In godzone, the kiwi don't fly because it did not need to for thousands of years, then those damn english brought rats over and nearly killed them all! Thus we have made the kiwi our national icon.
Think about this: The national American bird, the bald eagle, swift, magestic, soars above the clouds, a fierce predator with a proud history.
And the kiwi: Dumb, flightless, fat, nearly extinct due partly to its own stuidity, partly due to its incredibly low metabolism!
I, for one, do not want the kiwi as my national icon.

All our national icons in Spain have to do with drinking and getting fun. And of course that stupid and sick bullfights. Thankfully, most young people find them an atrocity. Hopefully, they will disappear at all.
btw - I loved kiwis when I was a child. They looked as the coolest creatures existing.
