Has any one had experience in making a TV show? has any one worked with computer editing of video? what type of computer power do I need. any software you can recommend? my school is trying to pull off some public access shows and I am in charge of making this happen.
You would require a good P4 or an AMD Athlon 3200+ with LOTS of RAM. Typically 1GB or more. You could use a Mac. They are great for video editing and stuff!
Theres no longer any real difference when it come to Mac or PC speedwise in videoediting, or quality wise.
But you'll probably find more programs for the Mac, than for the PC.

And probably, the PC software will be more expensive if you want the highquality stuff.

Other than that, like the bbq said, ram, and then more ram, and then you double it, then you might have enough Big Grin
That's probably why I can't do much of anything.. I got 512 MB of slow (133mhz) ram Sad
Look at VegasVideo...it's awesome. If you are looking for something quick and don't care about an amateurish look, then go for Windows Movie Maker...

I have a 3 Ghz P4 with 512 MB Ram, and an ATI9800XT. I experience no slowdown editing files that are hours long.

I'd say make sure you leave yourself 20 gigs of hdd space. I keep everything uncompressed, including the final mix, which only after itis finished I compress it with XviD or DivX or Indeo or something. I use about a DVD's worth of data per project easily and that's being very conservative.
the school has new computers P4 2.8Gh and 256MB ram dont know what speed. i dont know how much space is on the hard drives. im guess because they are new at least 20gb. could we save files to the server? i know it would take a long time to transfer the files to and from. the only problem is that the ingrated video only has 8mb but it is Dx 9 compatible. i odnt understand why it is dx 9 but lacks the ram to run most programs that uses dx9. the end product has to go on VHS not DVD. how do we handle that?
Diroga you will definitely need more than 256MB RAM. Also, you cant save stuff on the server lest you have a Gigabit network Wink Even on a 100Mbps network it will take a long time to transfer gigabytes of data...
well, my uncle used to be a computer graphics lead guy for advertising...so I know a few things about this kinda thing.

As stated above Mac has alot more digital image editing software. personally, for this kinda thing, i'd suggest using MacOS X, but if you only have windows, win2000 would be the best (XP eats up too much RAM on the desktop alone). I didn't learn too much about good programs to use, but I'm sure if you look on sourceforge.net, you might find something useful

Oz~
the school i higly doubt will get a mac just for a may-be project. but a dual 2.5Ghz 64bit G5's with 8Gb of 400Mhz RAM and ATI 9600 pro, hell-yeah! ok so scratck the net work. the comp tacher could put more ram and HDD into one of the comps. but it is so new that it dosnet have AGP port! only PCI and PCI exrpess! so we would need a new video card for about $250? the video quality doenst have to be amazing. it is only for public access
