Has anyone got any idea why the printer plugged into the usual LPT1 of my IMB Thikpad 600E fails to work with any Windows software, such as Word, Notepad, Wordpad etc. It has the correct Windows Driver installed, and it works ok under DOS and DOS programs like QB.

which printer are you using? do you get some error? How would we know why it fails? give us details... :O
Thanks for the offer of help. The first error box says:-

Invalid Data Aborting print job

Then the next and last error box says:-

There was an error writing to LPT1: (for the printer HP Deskjet 520 Printer) There was a problem printig to the printer due to an unknown system error. Restart Windows, and then try printing again.

Restarting Windows does not solve the problem on the Thinkpad. It is the correct printer, which woks ok on DOS stuff and on both WIN 3.1 and DOS when connected to an old HP Vectra 486/33n PC

i'm confused. Which OS are you running on the laptop? Win 3.1? Have you tried looking for a different driver on the internet? Have you tried drivers from driverguide.com ?
I should of course have explained that the IBM ThinkPad, where the printer fails to work under Windows software, has WIN. 98 installed and the Software AIDA32 Ver.3.70 displays the information below. It is the ancient HP Vectra 486/33N ( CMOS in German) that has Win 3.1 installed where the printer works ok.

I have often found it is not always important which exact printer driver you use for Windows, the wrong ones often work to some degree, at least producing some sort of printout. In this case we get nowt but errors.

Windows 98 ( as installed when bought )
OS Code Name Memphis
OS Language English ( United States )
OS Kernal Type WIN. 98
OS Version 4.10 1998 (Win 98 Retail )
OS Service Pack None
OS Installation Date 11/19/02
OS Root C:\Windows
For those who might be interested and ever perhaps experience a similar problem, I have at last solved the problem why my IBM ThinkPad Laptop refused to work the printer under Windows and only under DOS. I was browsing around the setups, and noticed the driver for the Infrared gadget was the same as one used for the printer LP1 port. So I disabled the Infra Red port, as I will never use because it is easier and cheaper now to use a Flash Rom; and lo and behold I now get printouts from the printer under Windows Word and Notepad etc.

I am still baffled as to why you can also enable/disable a Midi/Joystick port, when there is no such port, nor a picture of such a port as there is in the instructions for all the other ports!
