If I remember this was found when trying to find a name for freebasic. It's a dead project so v1c took the name and it got bumped down google.

A friend of mine in New York refers to "vaporware" as software which has not yet been written but the marketing people are already saying it's up and running.

Vic, in your context I'd expect it to either be abandonware (a project that stopped during development) or vapourware (a project that should have been made but never was).

Abandonware (such as QBasic) is an existing product no longer sold or supported.
Vaporware (Vapour is the British spelling, I think) is a product, like Longhorn, that the company announces, hypes, and talks about but doesn't exist yet.
QBasic = abandonware
Subshock = vaporware (or both?)
DOS = abandonware
FB documentation = vaporware
Quake 1 = abandonware
Quake 4 = vaporware
QBasic.com = abandonware
QB45.com = vaporware
etc.
