alt+enter takes me to fullscreen, but if i move my cursor to the corner of the display it scrolls away and shows the rest of my desktop as it was prior to alt-entering (without changing the gfx mode back).

Are you using FB 0.13?
This was a known bug in pre-0.13; in 0.13 I thought I removed it by switching from using the Xf86VidMode extension to using the Xrandr extension to toggle fullscreen...
