Strange things can happen around the Internet and copyright...

I have this image since years:

I found this one recently (Cheetah named Zulu, DeWildt Wildlife Centre):

Now mirror one of the Cheetahs... Strange, huh??!

Seeing this it is a very poor quality thing... Awfully cut around, contrast was reduced a little then inserted over that blurry backround, and of course mirrored and resized. Finally saved as a low quality JPG to hide the faults around the cutting. Without seeing the original i never thought about that it is a copy, i just thought that it is just a poor quality JPG for a web page to download as fast as possible.

When i saw that second image it instantly got in my mind that "i must have seen this Cheetah somewhere"... The positure was what led me to the old picture: i remembered to that i had seen a Cheetah in the same running positure - it can not happen so easily to take two at 100Km/h the same way, not to mention that the running style can differ (so an other Cheetah might absolutely miss this positure since (s)he used to hit the ground with her/his legs in a little different order).

Just wondering... What can happen to evade copyrights? (Although there was no note about any with the original image of Zulu).

Security through obscurity. There is about a 0.001% chance that the copyright owners will ever even know that you're using their picture, and a 0.00000000000000001% chance they'll try to do anything about it. They probably won't even care that you use it.

And if they ever do anything, it will just be a "cease and desist" email. It isn't worth their time or money to sue you for the use of that one JPG.

So basically, go ahead and use it. You're never gonna get into trouble for it.

Now if you were a big corporation with a lot of money, and you were making money by infringing on this copyright, you might actually have something to worry about. Wink
i agree, if your using the image in freeware or open-source projects, you'd be ok ..... but if you started selling the image or works that contained the image, thats when poeple start to get ticked, generally people see it as "well, if there making money off our image, than we should" or something along those lines
Thats creepy, a real copy cat aye?.....

Heh, I once found a a pic of a Mustang Cobra GT that didn't look right.. I then noticed the Numbers on the licience plate where backward.. Some1 must have been cheaply trying to hide the number by flipping.. dumb tho, , any car fan should have noticed the snake emblem was backward.. at least thats why it look so wierd.. Tongue
