i went to my bank to deposit some money and noticed some thing i thought was very dumb. on the computer in plain view of every one was the IP address for that computer. I know the bank probably has a fire wall and all but really putting an IP address for a bank computer out for every one to see??! is that studip or what?
wow, thats a security breach, and heres another thing i saw:
one day one of the news station for MN was doing a thing on
computers, and they had somebody from the station bring there
computer up to the camera to show them parts of it.
parts like: the motherboard, the sound card, the graphix card,
and of cours, the location of the IP adress...
right on tv. it wasnt even blured, they just showed it and kept going.
tells ya somthing about the news people here in MN, dont it?....
well.. was it the network IP? or was it an actual external IP.
thats the thing i was wondering. i pinged the IP but wasnt sure if it was stopped by the banks server or something.
It was probably the local IP address, and because a single branch of a bank is a relatively small business, it was probably a class C network. The IP addresses for each machine would be something like: 192.168.1.*, so there would only be 254 possible addresses anyway.
Granted its not the best idea to display IP addresses in plain sight, but its not really much of a security breach. Note that you can't ping (or otherwise directly reach) class C addresses from outside the local network.
That's not a security risk. If you ping the 127.0.0.1 IP, you are pinging your own computer. That is a common mistake made by even amateur hackers, so don't feel bad. For a funny article to make you feel smart, read this:

yeah i know what 127.0.0.1 thats why i said that. I wasnt about to tell xteraco or any one what the IP was. ha HA, the tables have turned.
