False: we can tell it if we live with them. Although they not talk, but express themselves much better than us by signal. And if you still not believe, look at that few humans still being completely (this is important!) isolated from civilization - they are happier than people involved in civilisation. (Be careful: usually the worst thing is when they are involved in it, but being left out from it's center like in Africa. They are not who i talked about above).

Just on that, SC, I work with cows. I milk 1,500 of them each shift. it's a long job. Generally IMHO they look mighty withdrawn. Happy isn't a word I'd use to describe any creature in captivity.

On the flip side, there are occasions where the odd younger cow wants to play with you rough while you herd them on the bike! The little girls just don't understand they are in the equivelant of Maximum Security Cow Prison!
