I have to admit that I'm something of a Doctor Who fan, and I've always been fascinated by the Tom Baker opening credits with the famous "Time-tunnel" slit-scan graphics.

To replicate this effect I've written a program that takes a bmp as a mask and creates a virtual 3D tunnel from it. Onto the sides of the tunnel is then projected a bmp texture that scrolls, giving the impression that you are travelling down the tunnel.

I also have a very similar second program hardwired for cylindrical tunnels as this produces slightly better image quality.

A person-shaped tunnel: (the white person shape has been overlayed afterwards to show how the mask fits the tunnel)

Of course once I found out how to do this it was only a matter of time before I went a bit further with the render and made my own replication of the closing titles: (click on the picture to see a 2MB DivX video of the render in action)

At the moment the soucecode is a little messy and I want to make the program much more configurable "by the user" rather than by tweaking sourcecode variables. Watch this space...
Donwloading the video.. screens look nice..

Excuse the unenlightened, but what is Dr Who?
Doctor Who was a BBC Science Fiction series running from 1963-1989. It featured an alien called the Doctor, who travelled around the universe in a time and space machine called the TARDIS, shaped like an old UK metropolitan Police Box. When the Doctor got mortally injured or died of old age, his body would "regenerate" into a different form.

In spring this year it was revived with Christopher Eccleston playing the lead and Billie Piper playing his companion. There's a guide to it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/n...ndex.shtml
