Quote:"I'm gonna try and do this"
is different from
"I'm gonna try to do this"
Im not sure 'try and do this' makes grammatical sense... I know everyone uses it, but it sounds more like a coloquaialdisaltsimism(sp?) then a real phrase... If you take it apart, it sounds really arrogant... "I'm going to try to do this, and I will succeed"
I'm going to try, and do, this.
Anyway, my pet hate is the way people use the word "Should", when they don't mean it, but it's shorter then saying what they mean (can't think of an example right now), or use any word/phrase when they really mean another (like: "That film is not as good as everyone else thinks it is" instead of "I don't like it").
And the word linkage. It has no use what so ever in the english language, it's just invented to try and re-impose a gramatical structure... And it will just end up confusing everyone more because gramatical structures ALLWAYS change...
it should never have been invented.

It isn't particularily eloquent grammar to use a word in a sentence twice, and so close together. For instance, "I want to try to bake a pie" is not ideal, because "to try to" is used. "I want to try and bake a pie" is better, because I only used "to" once.
Just a thought.

Saying "try and" is pointless. You might as well say "I am going to do this", not try to. It's improper grammar.
Sorry for mispellings. There isn't any google toolbar on this computer ('tis a big help).
Another pet peeve of my is when someone says anyways. Anyways is also improper grammar. Another one is "For all intensive purposes". It's "intents and purposes". I once heard a doctor say that. Couldn't beleive it.
Why are all my pet peeves grammar problems?

You'll need a 10 lb. sledge hammer, a blowtorch, about ten yards of bailing twine, an impact drill and some fluffy whip.
