I used to play Quake I on a P1 Windows 95 laptop. That worked fine. Now I have a P4 2.4 GHZ and Windows XP. No such luck with the game this time. I have the full version on the computer, and when I try to run QUAKE.EXE, I get this message inside a DOS box:
Quote:Quake v1.06

Any ideas folks?
1. Download VDMSound. After you install it, right click on quake.exe and select, "run with vdmsound."

2. Download Dosbox. Treat it like a command prompt after you mount your C drive, or whatever drive that contains quake.

That's about all that I can recommend at this point.
Quake would be a slideshow in DOSBox...I'd recommend trying a native win32 port of Quake, like GLQuake or Tenebrae.
GLQuake did the trick, thanks Plasma.
Barok, I already tried VDMS with no luck.

A correction, by the way, I have the SW version. Kazaa doesn't list any full version downloads of Quake 1, oddly enough.

Two problems now: a) the gfx are really bad - random red dots all over the place and very poor vision underwater, and b) the strip that tells you your ammo, health, armour, etc., is just a big solid red bar. Maybe that's related to it being the SW version?
Yeah, I think GLQuake is only supposed to be used with the full version of Quake. Tenebrae seems to work pretty good with the shareware version though.
Tenebrae's developers are extremely presumptuous...

"Just buy a new card, since they are all very old."

Yup...just give me $220US so I can buy one of the supported cards.
Yes, because a GeForce2 is soooooo expensive
I could even send you my old one if you wanted...

;P
Well, you can get a Windows port of the Quake engine. There are some of them that add nice effects so the game looks actually better.

The main, basic one is GLQuake. There are quite a few, some of them are listed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_engine

It's always a matter of copying the files into your quake folder then launch the executable. You'll be able to play at hi-res with extra effects and as a native Windows app, which gives you stability.

(btw, I use Twilight mainly, but sometimes I like to play using Tenebrae and the new texture packs :o )

Btw, you should enter the Quake I world by downloading some of the few total reconversions available in the net. I mean, a whole new game using the engine Tongue some of them are quite good. You can also try level expansions. Lotsa fun!
u need a floating-point processor. It won't work on mine either.
