A pal of mine is having trouble running QuickBasic 4.5. He says the display has the habit of automatically minimizing after a few seconds using certain SCREEN modes, especially SCREEN 12.

Anyone got a clue as to the problem? Could it be he has an unusual Video card installed?

My crystal ball shows nothing.

What card does he have? What other screen modes is he using when this happens? What OS is he using? Laptop or PC? Latest video drivers? Snap, crackle or pop?

Do only certain kinds of QB programs cause this to happen? Does he have any system tray apps that might cause this?

Has your friend tried running a complied version of the program?

The problem is that, in some Windows configurations (read: in most) there are programs that are running in the system tray that pop up some info randomly (i.e. emule showing something has downloaded, a firewall notifying some activity, Windows Update showing something, the Hard Disk Drive Inspector claiming that there's little space left in drive whatever, antivirus software moaning for something...). When this happens, the full-screen DOS session is minimized so that info shows.

Any activity in foreground to happend in the Windows desktop will bring the MSDOS screen down.
I am posting similar posts in various places, as I think it necessary to announce that I have now been able to successfully run graphics programs in QuickBASIC 4.5 running under Windows XP, version 5.1, Service Pack 1 or 2. It took unchecking the last 20 checkboxes, and leaving checked the first 8 checkboxes, in the Startup tab of msconfig.

This confirms na_th_an's post on this subject, thank you.
Ralph, congratulations, but instead of posting the same message in every forum, it might be better to create a new topic, imo.
By the way, I went on a witch hunt to find the offending "Load at startup" program. It turned out to be one called FLATBED.EXE, that comes with the software for my Paperport scanner. I have ALL the files listed in msconfig.exe STARTUP tab checked, except that one file, and QuickBASIC 4.5 runs perfectly!

I want to thank all who tried to help with different suggestions, but, most of all, Na_th_an, who explained it very well, excep that I could not relate to his explanations, at that time. Now that I have been able to find the answer, his explanations are right on course!
