Maybe the winter olympics in Torino have been an inspiration...

I'm thinking about bringing back the Qlympics, the Gaming Gold Awards, or make a new community-wide awards competition. There's been a huge void in the QB/FB community since the Gaming Golds ended in 2003 (or was it 2002?), and I think we should fill that.

So here's the plan:
I'm going to do a community-wide nomination round, and a final voting round a month later. Everyone will be allowed to vote (once). Then I'd write up the articles and deliver the awards in a special edition of QB Express.

I'd also like to recruit a graphics designer to make awards for all of the winners, and also some other writers to help me cover the competition. I will manage the competition, organize the voting, and do the lion's share of the writing -- but help would be appreciated.

This will probably be a few months off, but I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions. Let's hear 'em!
To Pete:

Yeah!! I think that is such an excellent idea for you to resurrect the Qlympics to its former glory and then some, man! :king: I mean, as many of us QB gaming fans can remember, that special event — when it first got started apparently wayyy back in 1999 — was so near and dearest to our hearts, since it was one of the *very* first competitions of the QB scene where it simply awarded the very best games that were made in QuickBASIC, and I can also remember so fondly that Wetspot II was one of the many that took home the big gold, and so well-deserved, too, I gotta add!!! ^-^=b !

I think we should extend the playing field to FreeBASIC as well, too, don’t you agree?

Speaking of which, here are my ideas: how about adding such FB categories in the new Qlympics as.....
  • • Best Original FB Game Library
    • Best Original FB Action/Arcade Game
    • Best Original FB RPG
    • Best Original FB Strategy Game
    • Best Original FB Text-Based Game
    • Best Original FB Graphics Demo
    • Best Original Groundbreaking FB Game
    • Best Original Graphics in an FB Game
    • Best Original Sound Design in an FB Game
    • Most Handsomest Male Character in an FB Game
    • Most Hottest Female Character in an FB Game
.....because I think it should gear us up for such sheer action, you know?

As for a new logo for the resurrected Qlympics, my man, I will see if I can whip up an amazing one for you within a week-and-a-half. Hey, I am gonna plan on doing it to be an intense blessing to you and this whole community so as to do something special on that now! Big Grin

See you again later, Pete, and I sure hope you take this message into such wonderful consideration. Wink

Yes, of course the Qlympics would now allow for both QB and FB submissions.

To keep it simple (and keep the number of categories manageable) I think I would do something like:

Best Overall FB Game
Best Overall QB Game
Best Overall FB Utility/Application
Best Overall QB Utility/Application

And then...
Best RPG (QB or FB)
Best Graphics Demo (QB or FB)
Best Action Game (QB or FB)
Best Library (QB or FB)
...and so on...

The logic is that there aren't enough QB programs released these days to warrant QB having its own complete set of categories. (How many new QB RPGs have actually been released since FB came out?)

Also, entries would be limited to programs released in the past year or year and a half. No more of this "all QB games from all time are eligible"... how many times are we gonna give the award to Wetspot II?

(For this first Qlympics, I'd probably start the entry window in November of 2004, back when FB first debuted...and in future Qlympics, it would just be the one year since the last Qlympics.)

Any thoughts?
Several thoughts:

1.- Although wetspot II rocks, I consider it a bit over-rated, as we have plenty of great QB games that are better  Wink It just made no sense that the game kept winning compos years after being released.
2.- The set of categories looks perfect to me. I'd just extend the period to two years. The transition from QB to fB resulted on a period of little actual full games released.
Whoa... I guess I missed this topic while my internet was disconnected. I just moved. Wink

Anyway, are you still going to do this?
sounds like a fantabulous idea. a competition will make people code more. And more coding means...something.. people like plaques. Some people will like it enough to start typing code. Yay for them.
dont forget to add a category for those of us who are not even close to semi-good at programming Smile
I hate to break it to you the hard way seph, but...in the normal Olympics, no one cares about the average athletes, only the best of the best. This wouldn't be any different. Something tells me there isn't going to be any categories for "most average programmer".
then there should be the Special FB Olympics
