My 7-8 year old HP is about to shit the bed. When my income tax comes back, I am looking at buying a new one. I mostly use it for surfing the net, playing games, my 4 year old plays learning games also, printing out photos, and I have some custom written pds7.1 programs that I use.

question 1: how does pds7.1 run on xp??? Any problems???

question 2: What is the better processor AMD Athlon or Pentium?

Is this a decent deal??
AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 3800+ HP
15 " lcd flat panel monitor
windows xp media center edition 2005 software
1024mb ddr memory
250 gb hard drive
double layer multiformat light scribe dvdrw dirve
9-1 media reader
ati radeon xpress 200 graphics
cheap color printer

$750 after rebates???

Or is that too much computer for all I do. I always say bigger is better.
NT Based systems suck with DOS emulation, run PDS off an emulator such as MESS.

AMD is faster, but Intel has always been the choice in computer gaming(after the motorola 68k that is).

That computer is extremely good, meant for media and gaming. Get either that or an IBM intellistation pro

I would disagree for one key purpose:

That's actually the graphics that my laptop has ($650 after rebates), and is a relatively new innovation from my dear old friends at Radeon, lol. From what I can tell, it uses it's own chip, but shares RAM... so it's a shared video card, but is still better than integrated? I guess. I dunno. It's decent, but not for "hardcore gaming".

If you want to get a good gaming computer, or one with good video/picture editing abilities, then go for a better graphics card. The rest of the system is phenominal for playing games, but without a good card it's pointless. It appears as though you're looking at buying from some pre-built company (I.E. Dell or HP, or Best Buy even)... and what you want to find out is if the graphics are upgradeable without buying a new motherboard. If that's the case, then you could get that system and put a new graphics card in when you get it, or later, or whatever. But if it's not upgradeable, then it's a little trickier. Putting in a new motherboard is basically like building the computer again, so if you're not at least somewhat technically savvy about how front facing LED and USB ports are connected, then I wouldn't even try without some help, lol.

Anyways, this appears to be somewhat like the computer my girlfriend got... and like I said it's decent but it would be SO much better with a nice Nvidia 6600GT or something like that... try http://www.NewEgg.com, they've got some good deals on graphics cards and whatnot.

But for the price of the system with a monitor, that can't really be beat... monitors are so expensive these days Sad

Good luck, and I hope this helped! otherwise you can always contact me on MSN, and we can bring in my brother (he's a major in Computer Science, in hardware R&D, and he knows a lot about this stuff)
Get an AMD by all means. The Intel thingo mentioned is a bit of BS, Intel was never used on games until X-Box, appart from some late 70s arcades which used the 8080.

In fact, you'll do fine with wether an Intel or an AMD, but AMDs offer more for less, that's all. Don't let a brand fool you, just look at the prices and performances.

An AMD Athlon 64 is currently the best pick for the everyday user who has to work and play with his computer.

And PDS can run great in the NTVDM of Windows XP as long as it doesn't try to do stuff with I/O ports such as LPT or COM. Remember that this is not MSDOS anymore.
Most people i know would also recommend AMD for games.
People tell me that Intel or AMD processors, theres not really alot in it.

And thats a really handsome price and machine deal you've found there, Nice. Makes me want to move, where all things PC are hugely cheaper.
Found it at Best Buy. I will look into the graphics card when I get a chance. Thanks for all the input.

yeah that sounds like the same one my girlfriend got... it plays World of Warcraft just fine on low-medium settings, but if you put a decent graphics card in there you could play stuff like Battlefield 2 or Half-Life 2 or F.E.A.R. full settings no problem (not to mention World of Warcraft...)
