It's like the ultimate French art film. Just unrelated event after unrelated event after unrelated event. Oh look! An elephant shed a tear because somebody was mean to a teacup!
Nope, this show isn't cute. It isn't cute at all.
Important note to writers: Just making sure to never tell anyone what's going on doesn't make your story enigmatic.
Doing it while there's a character named god doesn't make your story philosophical.
And for fucks sake, doing it while lying every once in a while to the viewer so they have to figure out what parts were just fantasy and what parts were real does NOT make it art.
In the end, I hate to say it, but Serial Experiments Lain could have been done a billion times better, and thus joins the short list of the shows I did not enjoy very much.
BUT, Lain in her slip with a screwdriver dangling out of her mouth was very cute.
