Let me start off by saying that I used to download music illegally. When I realized the error of my ways, I deleted all the songs I downloaded illegally (also because I didn't listen to any of them anymore).

Well I got an MP3 player and wanted to hear some new cool songs I heard on the radio that I enjoyed. So I bought a $15 card for Napster and downloaded the appropriate Napster software and proceeded to buy 15 songs.

Well even though it was a hassle to copy them to my MP3 player, I thought it was worth it. I got a good mix of songs at the price of a CD.

Then, my old laptop busted and I had to get a new one. No problem until I find that I can't copy songs to my MP3 player unless I use Windows Media Player or Napster directly! Not too big of a problem because this is how it was before on my old laptop.

The reason it became a problem for me now is because Windows Media Player says I need to obtain a liscense for the songs before it can copy them to my portable device!

So I said fine, and went and opened Napster to copy the songs over. I import them into the Napster library and what do they say? "Sorry but you will need to buy these tracks first!"

WTF!?

It's like the RIAA is inadvertently encouraging people to steal music with all this ****ing inconvience! I'm tempted to go and write a **** YOU RIAA email explaining how stupid they are for making everybody's life harder.

And on a similar note, I bought a CD genuinely from the store a year ago, and because I chose not to have an internet connection on my computer, was not able to obtain a liscense so I could not copy the songs to my computer!!! It's not like I was planning on making multiple freakin copies, I just wanted to add them into my winamp mix! WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING TO THIS FREAKIN WORLD!?

I swear I am this close to denouncing the human species in all its entirety.
Somebody in the IRC channel that Nek and marzec go to informed me of a way to illegally download music from google.com. I have since switched computers and no longer have access to this information. **NOT THAT I WOULD WISH TO USE THIS INFORMATION FOR ILLEGAL PURPOSES** but I simply wish to know who that was.

If you are the person I am referring to, then contact me through sephknows@gmail.com and let me know again please.
Seph, I totally agree with you. The world is geting f**ked up in many ways. Like you discovered, it's extremly hard to do things "by the book" versus just doing them illegally.

For example, here in Mexico a great percentage of people and businesses, over 40%, do not file or pay any taxes. If you saw the extremely complicated bureaucracy for filing and paying taxes according to the local laws, them you would understand why people just don't.

well you could just buy a cd in the first place, then you don't have to worry about it. But I agree that all that online stuff is retarded.
Google is your friend:

Code:
-inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:php -inurl:asp -inurl:doc -inurl:pdf -inurl:shtml -inurl:txt AND (“index of”|"last modified"|"parent of") AND mp3 -ringtone -lyric -playlist AND “Who let the dogs out"

seph, that was my friend will`. Just use the filetype: option on Google.

I buy all of my music semi-legitimately from www.allofmp3.com.

edit: actually, I just remembered that will` did searches for the title of the page being "Index of music" or something. Sumo's search string looks neat.
heh...

btw, i forgot to add, altavista has a audio search built right in. just go to alta vista then click on the "audio" tab.
The whole music protection scheme is still very infantile so expect it to give you grief. In addition, it's a load of shit anyways, so why bother bending to it?
All 900 or so of my songs are from ripped CDs. That's legal, but I'm using an illegal copy of a certain "upgrade to pro" program from a keygen (the icon is a thong, for some reason (can you guess what I'm using?))

I say if the program was freeware for 5 years, then it got bumped to shareware and some features removed and sold for too much which other programs do for free (like rip music to mp3 or burn at high speeds) then it's only right to give yourself access to what you should rightly have.

However, if you're going to buy music off the internet, I suggest iTunes. It's very simple, but it has a lot of music and it runs nicely. Napster was good back when it was good, and now that file sharing is given the name "piracy" (that wasn't there in the ninteys!) it's really just not fun anymore.
I have a numerous amount of songs ripped from my own bought CD's and vinyl. This should be fine you would think, but here in the UK we have no fair use law, so even copying legally purchased CDs to Hard Disk is illegal. I think thats stupid, if i kept taking my CDs and Records out the packaging they'd get scratched up in no time.

I've never bought a CD yet that doesn't let me rip it, if i found one i'd get very suspicious after reading about the Sony/BMG rootkit
