okay then, its time for me to re-install windows xp pro again. i have done it before with no worries, so theres no hassles there.
but last time i was forced into reinstalling because windows decided to die and i did not have any backups of my essential data... oops!

but not this time! im prepaired! i have backed up all of my essential stuff to my second partition, noted down all of the critical settings etc...
what i am wondering is, are there any tips or tricks that i should know when installing xp? a different way of doing it that will result in a better windows eXPerience (if thats possible!) maybe? anything that i should or should not do?

on another related topic, after installing xp i will be installing ubuntu for dual booting goodness! again i have succesfully done this before but last time GRUB got some funky errors and would not work so in the end i put the windows boot loader back and deleted ubuntu.
again, im asking if their are any tips or tricks to installing ubuntu, what size swap drive (?) shuld i have? how big of a partition should i give ubuntu ? (i have 20gb available for windows and ububntu)

if anyone has any words of wisdom or advice, they will be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
jupiter3888

PS. i will be installing the OS's on an asus A4l laptop with 256mb ram, 2.8GHz celeron, 40gb hdd, wireless etc.
just incase if u needed to know!
When i had xp and ubuntu in dual boot, ubuntu worked fine with 5gigs.
Minium is (i guess) 1 gig. Best choice is, skip the xp installing and give whole 20gigs for ubuntu
yeah i am going to go with 1gb because of lack of space.
im not ready to go linux just by itself yet, im still a major newbie at linux.
1 gb is not going to be enough for ubuntu.

I'd go with 5gb. It's enough to get all the programs you want and have just enough left over to have some fun.

I partition my drive like so:

5 GB = reiserfs, linux partition, mount point = /
512 MB = swap partition
50 GB = NTFS Windows partition, mount point = /media/windows

it works pretty good.

Then after installation i log in as root, update /boot/grub/menu.lst so that the list doesn't display unnecessary items, and defaults to what I want and the delay is acceptable, and then rub grub-install to propagate that change.

I rather like Ubuntu, as it's the only Linux that has properly detected most of my laptop hardware (though still getting the wireless ethernet to work was a real trick). Definately worthwhile...
