Hi guys. One of our office computers stopped working. Since I'm the "computer guy" at work, they asked me if I could fix it. I'm not a hardware guru, but I could build a computer form different parts. But this problem really got me stumped even after like 2 hours of working on it. Had to stop since my students are waiting for me already).

The problem started when one teacher played some yahoo games (which I installed discreetly) and the computer crashed. And it won't load windows again.

Here are the symptoms:

1. First thing I tried was try safemode.
  • result: Says VMM32.vxd is damaged. Powers down or Hangs
2. Normal mode
result:
  • A) Hangs in the logo
B)Hangs in Scandisk and produces garbage. The one I could read says "Division by Zero"
    C) Displays this:
"Causeway error 09. Unrecoverable Internal exception. Program terminated"
    (displays the contents of registers)
    System Flags 80000002

3. Step by step confirmation
  • result: Hangs when I load any driver except the first 2

4. Command Prompt Only
  • ->Produces the same result as normal mode, restarts and hangs when it displays the system specs

5. Safe mode command prompt
  • -> Hangs randomly

I tried reinstalling win98 from the cd rom with any of these results:
  • a) Hangs at scandisk with div by zero error and text garbage
    b) Displays "runtime error MG111: math"
    c) Displays "runtime error RG"
    d) Displays "runtime error ????Confusedprintf"
I also tried taking off the memory, vid card, power supply, all of the peripherals and putting them back again with the same results.

Thanks in advance!
Man, that sounds pretty bad. Have you tried resetting the BIOS?

If that doesn't work then I suggest you resort to physical measures, such as kicking.

See, I was drinking water when I read this. Now my monitor is drinking some as well...
VMM32.vxd is fairly important. Try creating a boot disk with another computer and snag vmm32.vxd from a system running the same operating system to replace it.

If this is not your problem, then the issues with Scandisk might suggets that the hard drive has something really wrong with it, and if a reinstallation of the OS didn't solve the problem, then it might even be physical. I've never had sucha problem with a hard disk, and the best way I can think of to diagnose the problem without special software is to try installing the hard disk in another computer to see if it gives you similar problems.
hmm... I did some quick research (a.k.a. googling) and it seems the causeway error is related to motherboard problems or possibly a bad motherboard. A bit more digging and I found a small paragraph on how to solve the problem. I'm not certain about this though.

Quote:This error indicates a problem on the motherboard assembly. Check the IC's that are in sockets for pins or poor connections. Also clean the contacts on the I/O board, riser board, and the SIMMs with an eraser and clean off any dirt or dust that may have built up on the boards. If this does not correct the problem, the motherboard assembly will have to be sent in for repair through your local authorized Merit distributor.
