I don't know how it is that, now, when I run QuickBASIC, my screen is barrel-shaped, with the sides bulging near the middle. The QBASICnews screen, as are all others that I have tried, are normal, with straight sides. Any suggestions or cures?
Adjust the pincushion setting on your monitor while you are using QuickBASIC.
Thank you so much, Plasma! I was afraid it would affect all screens, Windows, Excel, etc., so I ddn't want to touch that setting. Apparently, that adjustment only affects the screen of the current program. Learn something every day!
The monitor settings vary with the video mode, not the program. It seems that you had the text mode misconfigured.

Thank you for your information. But, now I'm back to a mystery! All views of Excel, Windows, Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and even the QuickBASIC 4.5 window view were nice and rectangular. It was only when I was in the full screen in 4.5 that, at some time, the barrel shape started appearing. And, that screen was the one that I was able to adjust with the pin-cushion option on my monitor, thanks to Moneo's instructions.

Does the above tally with your analysis that "It seems that you had the text mode misconfigured"? I don't understand it, because both the full screen and the window for 4.5 were in the default text, or screen 0, mode.
Your monitor saves configuration settings (like pincushion) for individual screen modes (based on the resolution resolution, sometimes the refresh rate too).

When you ran QB in windowed mode, there was no change in resolution from the one you use when using other programs in Windows, just an emulated text mode in a plain window. When you full screen it, on the other hand, the resolution is changed, and your monitor loads up a new set of configuration settings, which you had yet to configure correctly.
Thank you all for your explanations. I do think that now I understand it better, and I can now put the issue to rest.
