I'm trying to set up a wireless router so my main computer and my brother's laptop can share an internet connection. I want the laptop, which has a wi-fi card, to have wireless access. I have a DSL connection with a Speedstream modem and TRENDnet wireless router. When everything is connected and as it should be, the main computer will not connect to the internet, and therefore neither will the laptop (which is getting a strong wireless signal, so no problems there). So I figure I must have configured something wrong on the software side. Somehow, the router's password to access the setup wizard got changed, and no matter what I try, it will not allow me in to change the settings. I've tried pressing the reset button on the back of the router, which didn't help.
I have things set up as follows: my main computer has an ethernet cord from it's ethernet port to one of the router's LAN ports. Another ethernet cord goes from the DSL modem to the WAN port on the router. Everything has power, and the modem is communicating with the remote host. However, when I try to connect (via the usual "connecting with PPPoE via the WAN miniport), it fails, claming there was no answer. I cannot edit the router's settings because the password got changed somehow and won't let me in.
Here's a diagram:

Does anybody have any experience with this? This is my first network setup so I'm not completely sure what I'm doing.
Try having your router emulate your main pc (the one that used to be on the inet)'s MAC address and host name. Some ISP locks the MAC and/or hostname to the first pc that connects (back when it was first set up).
Are you sure you've reset the router? Usually you have to disconnect power and hold the reset button for some number of seconds. Also make sure you're trying the right default username and password (there are many lists of defaults if you don't have the manual anymore). Cloning the MAC of your desktop like Zap said is a good thing to try as well. I haven't had any experience with PPPoE, but maybe you need to change some router settings for that too.
This could be an issue with your ISP... the way that some DSL lines are connecting make it really stupid and complicated to share the signal. For instance...

at my girlfriend's house, her dad bought a wireless router and a wireless USB adapter for the other computer (her family got a new computer, so she got the old one). Being completely and totally computer illiterate, they waited for me to visit before attempting to hook it up. The way that their internet came in (it was also DSL) called for them to automatically put in the IP Address. So that's kind of weird. IP, Subnet mask (which is always the same, it seems...), default gateway, and DNS.

So I did what you did, I plugged the internet into the wireless router, and then the main PC into the router. However, neither computer worked. The wireless worked great, it had an "excellent" signal, but nothing happened. I reached a 'workaround' by installing a second ethernet card into the main PC. I then hooked the internet into the ethernet port on the motherboard, and then plugged the router into that port. You go into network settings and share the internet connection, and then hopefully it will work.

If this doesn't work... um... keep trying. It took me about 6 hours (3 hours for 2 days) to finally get it to work, and then I was frustrated as all hell.... networking is by far the biggest computer pain I've ever experienced. Good luck though.

I'm very new to networking - how do I do this?

@Drv: I'll try different resetting "techniques".
Now I can't even get to the part where it asks me for the password - I get a "Net reset error" in the browser.
I left the router off overnight, so I guess that reset it because I was able to get into the router's configuration setup. I changed the setting that controls the IP addresses from DHCP to PPPoE, and now the wireless connection on the laptop works and I am able to use the internet. However the wire connection from the router to the main computer still won't allow me into the configuration, and therefore won't let me change a setting so both the laptop and the main computer can use the internet at the same time.
So really I need to figure out why I get a "net reset error" from firefox when trying to access the router's config page.

[EDIT]Nevermind! At last, I figured it out and everything works - I needed to change the TCP/IP settings to obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically. Thanks for the help, though!
