I was reading about Ken Silverman, creator of Kens Labrinth and the Build Engine (Duke3d, Blood, etc), the other day and discovered that the early prototypes for both the build engine and its map editor were written in QBasic. Ken has even made the source available, see Ken's Build Engine Page and Ken's Build Engine Source Code Page. I downloaded picrot4.bas from the first link and was able to get it going in dosbox. Its pretty slow and the code is a bit horrid, but its fairly impressive for QBasic in 1993.
