I've been considering upgrading to Windows XP from Windows 98. I know my system meets the minimum requirements, but I'd like some input before I go out and spend $80 on an upgrade.

My hardware is:

Graphics card: Matrox G200 AGP
Processor: Pentium III MMX at 500 mhz
Hard disk space: C: at 9 GB, D: at 12 GB
Memory: 256 MB

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

My old Dell 4100 testbed with XP with PIII@866 Mhz and all effects made for a quite average experience. Try 2000 since you can say its just a version of XP without all the sugar coating, and it will perform just a little better. For example, your mouse may not lag periodically and you save all that space from the themes and that sad excuse for a firewall that you won't use.
I would go with Windows 2000 also. You can run XP on that system, but it will be noticeably slower than 98.
I would upgrade for Windows 98 to DOS.

But seriously, with 256MB of RAM XP won't run very well, M$ recommends 512MB to run XP and realistically you should have 1GB. If 98 runs well, then I wouldn't bother to upgrade. I assume it isn't your main computer anyway, right? If it is then I would spurge on a new computer, but wait for Vista to come out, or upgrade to OSX Tongue
Where the hell can I get Win 2K these days? Online isn't an option, I don't have an online account thingy that you need to buy stuff.

Worked fine for me. No problems when I cut off every fugly effect and theme XP has and revert to the "classic mode".

Well, if you don't want to setup an online account on PayPal, you can buy Windows Server 2003, which I believe you can still buy from stores.

I beg to differ. I use 256, and it's quite smooth.

You mean pirate it with BitTorrent? Can you do that with XP?
Use Linux. You can download it on a live CD and try it out w/out installing.

Mepis gives you the option to install permanently later if you wish. Comes with loadz o' software. You can even set it up to dual boot to windows or Linux. Do it.

My family would shoot me for switching to Linux. I know I could dual-boot, but to them dual-boot is the same as replacing Windows.
