Woha wtf the site is back up?? This is news to me...

Kevin, that looks like a great mod, I might implement it for the only remaining phpbb forums that I administrate. We were having spam problems on our SMF-based forum at Frozen Utopia, but then I discovered that it has a high-security CAPTCHA. Thus far, no spambot has stood a chance against it. :rotfl:

That's very sad, indeed. This place was once "the Hub" for all the things BASIC, and I really mean it.

Nice to read you all again, dudes. I really missed you.

Anyway, a forum is its posters, so we can still resurrect this, IMHO.

Dave, I also use the Captcha thing and it works really good. I've even seen captchas when posting messages, but I think that's way over the top. Btw, cheers! Big Grin How's the girl? Wink

Rhiannon's been asking about you, wanting to know where you disappeared to!

I have been looking at QBN every day, even before lockup. A few days ago, I noticed that two parts of the formum were unlocked, QBasic Programming Help and QBasic Projects. Today, I noticed that all the rest of this forum is now unlocked! Great!

And, I didn't even have to log in to post. Seems QBN remembered me, and let me in, as before lockout. Big Grin

It seems that you can't post new topics in at least the Art and Music forum, though.

I'll have a look at that mod, as I want to open registerations again.

I didn't realise that most of the forums were unpostable in, I've fixed that now.

What is the main issue with nuking the forum and upgrading to the latest version (other than losing all posts)? Make everyone who actually comes here re-register and start from scratch. Then nobody has to go in and worry about spam and other things - the new versions of PHPBB have CAPTCHA built-in to the code, among other stops.

And if everyone who administers the site is too lazy, I can volunteer :^_^:

That's the only way I see this forum getting back on its feet.

phpBB, even the latest version, is a spammer's dream forum. I say if you want to do a new forum, the only way is SMF. It's the most spammer-resistant forum software there is right now, even vBulletin isn't as bulletproof, and that stupid thing costs a lot of money.

There are two problems:
1. The phpBB2 CAPTCHA is a total piece of shit. Spambots can go through that sucker like liquid through a strainer. 500 spammers got onto osFree's phpBB2 forums with the CAPTCHA on. I upgraded the forum, but it still uses the same piss poor captcha in the latest version, so it didn't stop it. It took that mod to stop the spammers from registering and another to delete all of them because otherwise I'd have to look up their information individually rather than just having a delete button, but it could have been better. For example, I could have had a check mark to mass delete, but of course that would have been to smart for the phpBB team to implement.
2. Losing all the posts loses the possibility new members could come to the community. People would rather be on a forum we previous activity than a dead one. We could upgrade from phpBB2 to phpBB3 and lose no posts.
