New domain for the Mandelbrot Dazibao - Jark - 01-21-2005

Yes, it's been a while, but it's never too late 1) to wish all the best for all of you in 2005, 2) to announce that I have purchased a domain name for my webpage.

Nothing new, just the URL which becomes:

http://www.mandelbrot-dazibao.com

I still have this project for a Hi-Res Landscape renderer in QB...

I have started to post the music I record on my PC with Cubase. Nothing to see with fractals or QB, just a project for, maybe, a complete CD in a few weeks. You can download the MP3's from

http://mandelbrot.dazibao.free.fr/Music

Please note that the registration for the rights is in progress: the MP3's are for free (I don't plan to live from making records), but you're not allowed to play, record or sell this music out of the family circle.

Anyway, the comments and feedback from the QB community will be more than wellcome :???: Smile

Welcome back =)

EDIT: Downloaded your MP3s, listning to them now, so far they sound good. =)

Hey, Jark. Nice to hear from ya. You should think about porting your landscape program to FreeBasic. Tongue

Porting... - Jark - 01-22-2005

Well, I of course have downloaded FreeBasic, but I admit I didn't find time to get my hands into that very promising compiler. But a guy named Tom Sparks has started to port TC-Ray under PowerBasic. To be continued Big Grin

Aw... Man, PowerBasic is not free. Well, at least not legally. I'd suggest you to try fB. Porting your code would be as easy as changing your calls to graphics subs (i.e. drawing a point or a line).

Give it a try! Smile

FB also produces better code than PB...but that's another story. Big Grin

Switching to FB... - Jark - 01-22-2005

What I meant is that porting my code seems feasible: I never tried to use PowerBasic myself. In fact, Free Basic is the first compiler different from QB I will probably switch to: all my other attempts were discouraging. Not because these compilers were not good products, just because the ease of use of QB has (IMO) never been equaled. Remember I usually do not compile my programs! As said above, I did not really spent time on FB, but my understanding is that it can (in summary) generate 32bits exe from a QB piece of code, but for minor adaptations. Is that correct ?

Completely. FB is 100% syntax compatible with QB. The only things you have to change are MSDOS-specific stuff, such as low-level access to devices. But as you used a library for graphics, you just have to change the graphic calls. Sterling wrote a GFX library that works exactly like QB's default one but highly enhaced that uses SDL, and Angelo wrote an alternative version that uses DX directly.

By all means, try it, and if you get stuck, you know where to ask Smile

Sure ! - Jark - 01-22-2005

You've probably heard about my personal problems, and I'm coming back very slowly to my previous activities. FB gives me an excellent opportunity to come back here: I realise each time I browse these forums that it's a kind of virtual friends house here. Feels good to write and read with all of you Big Grin

Agreed. Tongue It's an excellent time to get back into it too. There are people coming back in that have abandoned QB years ago.

When you get comfortable with it and everything, you should check out OpenGL. Big Grin
