I didn't test your program, but I'm guessing you had a snake program in text mode...I believe the way the original nibbles dealt with the non-square shape of the text "pixel" was by using chr$(220) & CHR$(223) to divide each "pixel" into two square halves. This effictively makes the screen 80x50, even though the program operates in 80x25 mode.
