Just saw this old post by chance.
"Inventar la sopa de ajo" is strictly a saying in Spain, mainly because most other Spanish-speaking countries do not eat garlic soup.
The equivalent saying in Mexico is "inventar el hilo negro" --- invent (or reinvent) black thread.
Another old Spanish saying that I like is: "tan viejo como mear contra la pared" --- as old as pissing against a wall. I don't know of a closer equivalent saying in English.
