Actually, the gray boxes appear in the same place for me always and don't go away with a middle-click. . . It's probably just my PC though.
As for the tabs, you can't change that with CSS currently as far as I know. I don't think any browsers, even Firefox, have implemented the 'word-spacing' property and I don't think it would resolve it anyway.
