Speaking in terms of FB, sorting a file using chunks of 1, 2, or 3 bytes is very easy and requires only 1 pass of all the data.
However, from 4 bytes and up using that cheap (but fast and efficient) algorithm will not work anymore due to the memory limitations of 100MB.
I also agree with Antoni that putting a raw data file in binary format is very easy to extract the required data from.
I can easily make a program that sorts by 1, 2, or 3 bytes, but 4 bytes will take too much time for me at the moment, considering my extremely poor programming skills and my newbiness.
