XP is more stable than any other version of Windows since 3.1, Vista is terrible... right now. Within six months most of the compatibility bugs will be worked out and a service pack will be released.
Linux isn't very well supported, but it is extremely stable. There is a program called Wine that allows Linux to run Windows programs, I'm not sure if it is 100% compatible, but most Linux users dual boot.
Once that first service pack comes out it should be fine and by then most software will be upgraded. What is it with Microsoft and not using backwards compatibility? *cough* 360 *cough*
Windows is always notorious for not being very secure, why do you think most servers use Unix or Linux?

f you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows.
