STFU N00B! You got no idea what you're on about.

I hate Microsoft. I'm not a big fan of Windows. But I use it because it works better for me than anything else I've tried.

When you say you can't install Windows on many machines... were these machines actually setup properly and meet at least install requirements before you get the BSOD? And if you know anything about Windows at ALL... you'd know what a BSOD is. Also, did you know what you were doing in the first place?

Third party companies don't have access to the Windows source and therefore simply have to either guess or pay a shitload to get a reference on "How to program stuff for Windows without crashing it".

Most companies' products which DON'T deal with hardware directly don't bother too much about it and have a guess. Most of the time it ends up just dandy. Sometimes shit happens. Fix it, get over it.

You think about this - Windows, Linux, MacOS... They have so much work to do. They don't just give you control of your hardware, they control every aspect of the computer. EVERYTHING. The fact they do all this as well as give you freedom to use the computer as you would want to means that there is a lot of code there. A million lines or so? God only knows. You try to make a program that powerful and big without bugs and issues.

Thought so, you can't. Nor can I. Not even Linux is that stable. Been there done that. And its taken 16 years to get this far with it, and maybe a few tens of thousands of code contributers. Like I said - it's still nowhere near perfect.

It does all of this behind the scenes, without complaining of a problem, unless there actually is one, and most times this is caused by "dodgy third party" software not correctly installed or uninstalled. Sometimes by a virus, but if you use Anti-Virus and keep it up to date, you generally don't have a problem.

If you are not using your computer on the internet, Service Pack 2 is not needed. If you are going to be connected and regularly, keep your system updated. I never have problems in that respect.

As for paying for Windows, I got my copy of XP Home as an OEM. With or without it I paid the same amount for the computer. So I got it.

Not including Windows Vista (which I have not used due to lack of money and not meeting hardware requirements) I have used every version of Windows since 3.11.

So far, XP fits the bill as being the most stable. How is this, not counting restarts due to updates, I have not had to reboot due to a crash for a long time.

This is called maintenance. Would you drive a car with around 5,000 moving parts for a million kilometres/miles without checking the oil every once in a while? Give it a wash, inspect for damage, wear, leaks...

Of course not. Why would you leave a computer unmaintained?

Like I said from the start: STFU N00B.
Screwing with your reality since 1998.
