why not just force a password?

I have noticed the botspam too, so why not just password protect viewing the forum instead of locking everything?

The spammer could just write a script to prompt him when the password prompt comes up.

Implementing a question the user must logically answer upon registering is another effective way of doing things-- I visit a couple forums that do this, and they have literally no spam problems. But really, this place is kinda dead anyway... Without the spam I'd say the forum would be abandoned anyway.

Well unfortunately I no longer have a working ftp account for this place, and nor do any of the other active admins. So we can't really change or add anything besides what the phpBB2 admin interface allows, which is next to nothing useful in this respect.

Appereantly *some* people have a hard time not firing their mudslingers and flame guns like a linux nerd circle jerk, so I'm just going to go ahead and lock this topic already.
