Should we mirror / archive dead QB sites?
#1
A troubling number of major QB sites have been going down in the past few months... QB45, QBNZ, V Planet!, QBRPGs...and almost QBasic News.

I've been thinking of starting a mirror site for FULL versions of these sites, to ensure that the resources are still available on the web.  I have more than enough room on my server, and I think it's really important that we keep these resources alive.

What do you guys think?

Is it ethical to put up a mirror of an abandoned website, without the permission of the owner?

Do any of you happen to have archives of sites that you could send me?

On another note, I am glad to provide free hosting to anyone who desires it.  Just send me an email! (pberg1@gmail.com)  I've got a huge amount of server space and a ton of bandwidth, and I can assure you that you won't have to worry about the server going offline at any point in the future.  I intend to keep my websites online for eternity, heheh.

Good idea in my book.

Is it ethical to mirror a site without permission?  Not really but webarchives doesn't ask permission to do so for one thing.  of course then comes 2 other questions ;-).

1. is it ethical for resources like the ones worth mirroring to dissapear?
2. Would these people that decide to get rid of their resources consider having it either mirrored or hosted on your site?  (my guess is yes).

So perhaps a quick email to them about it. I say if you can reach the owner of the website great , if the owner doesn't reply or the email bounces back, go ahead and mirror those. :-).

That's alot of emails but you can batch send the same thing to everyone hehe.
hen they say it can't be done, THAT's when they call me ;-).

Hold on there. QB45 will live again as not just a flatforum, with as many of the previous files as were archived by a member of the site (Tutorials and all). Any more on this, I will not tell.

Also, it seems that your downloads section has been attracting tons of spam comments at least on the front page. You might want to clean that out if you have the time, and the effort, and to put in a good antispam system. It's getting into the quadruple digits.

VPlanetmag.com was down a few days ago for over 20 hours (which was a huge pain in the ass, since I was trying to collect screenshots of old games and they have the best collection of them).

Anyway, I thought it was dead.  I'm going to make a backup of the whole site at some point, just in case it ever does go down.

I think mirroring dead sites is really useful and a good thing, as long as they are dead. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html) is a really interesting tool but can also be the only place some sites have been saved, so others mirroring sites is also important.

The owner of V Planet should have a backup of the whole site, you might want to ask him/her. That's the way I'd go.
