True AI
#1
Is true AI possible. true means has emotions, understands and learns without professional help.

I have voted 5 years because in my opinion we are just the equivalent to a computer that has been programmed with AI. A dog has emotions and can learn without professional help. The difference between us and dogs is the original program in our genes. Now to give a computer AI it would have to be programmed, how that program is written would decide the personality of the computer. At least a computer does not come with all the baggage that our genes contain, like avarice, greed etc. We are so complicated in the regeneration of our original program that no two human beings are exactly the same , even identical twins, but computers could be programmed to respond in the way we want them to respond.

I voted in the next 20 years. My reasoning being that I don't think processors are quite fast enough at this point. Also, memristors, while proven to be a possibile realistic solution in the lab, will take quite some time to become mass produced at a reasonable cost and probably a bit longer to be used effectively. Interesting question! Smile

roy: the human brain gets things like greed, avarice, etc. because of how it is brought up. for example someone brought up in a rich miserly family will probably be greedy. it is not all based on genes. my point is that it would not be true ai if it had preprogrammed attitude.

I agree with Dr_Davenstein and think that it will be created by memristors or similar eventually.

in my post to roy i did not mean to be stereotypical. a person brought up like in the example could be generous and kind but that would be influenced by someone.

If your question was meant to say "When will computers be the equivalent to man"? then I would agree on 20 years or longer. I would have to disagree that a computer has to have neurons, which are what memristors are aiming at, to be able to understand, learn and have emotions. To make a computer to be the same as us you are going to need hormones and a lot of other baggage, as I said before. Greed etc. is in our genes but by learning we overcome many of those base instincts but a fox for example will kill a lot more chickens than it could ever eat, it was not taught to do this. Two people can come from the same upbringing and yet one can be nice while the other will be a pig.

Sorry, i meant will it be the equivalent to man but worded it wrong. the brain is really confusing and to make things even more complex it is always changing the paths between neurons. also the gaps between axons do not always transmit to 1 dendrite. when an axon emits nitrous oxide it effects all the dendrites within a certain radius. I probably spelt more than half the words in the previous sentance wrong. well done if you understand my spelling.

This is what I was saying about baggage. Because our brain works in this way it does not mean that a perfected brain should have the same baggage. At the same time I do not want a perfected brain to run the world. It would be great if our complexity of brain patterns could be assisted by computer brains that were superior in certain things but allowed us to do our own thing.

So in the next twenty years there should be True AI assistants, possibly built into our brains, that give us advice in thier specialty area but we are in full control. how about that.
