How do i turn on EMS in windows 98?

The Windows 98 help file actually discusses that briefly, I think.

You need to add this to your C:\config.sys file:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM HIGHSCAN
...and then reboot.

The above is Windows 3.x/95/98 specific, but this (below) also applies to other versions of Windows as well:

Right-click on whatever program it is that requires EMS, under one of the tabs (or you might have to click on 'Advanced' or some other button... just look around) you'll find an option to set how much XMS, EMS, etc mem the program gets; make sure they're set to Auto. I just do this for my DOS prompt, that way its setting apply to any program I run within it.

This is a VERY common issue; *cough* maybe it should be in the FAQ *cough*...

What's your OS? There is probably no room for the pageframe in the UMA.

I'm not sure why anything should be required to be in the CONFIG.SYS. I never turn EMS on in my CONFIG.SYS and I've never had a problem running an EMS-dependent program in a DOS window.

In DOS (no DOS window... just plain DOS) you need to add HIMEM.SYS before loading EMM386.EXE, as EMM386 uses XMS to "emulate" EMS. In Windows, HIMEM.SYS is usually invoked by default at startup.

BTW, HIGHSCAN isn't necessary at all, and in some computers that parameter can hang the system. One word: Microsoft.

erm... i always just set the memory tab in dosbox properties to 16mb ems and it works fine.

thanks guys, i tried that command line, but it didnt work, so i typed it in the advanced settings of DOS programs.

Only problem is that i have to resart in DOS mode for it to work.
