EMS Extended... Expanded ... HUH!?
#1
Hey I was just confused. There are a lot of games out there on the internet that are all old and DOS based and stuff now mostly just called 'Abandonware' ya know, but sometimes it yells at me (okay, so my computer just types at me) that I don't have EMS memory adaptor or an XMS memory adapter. Does anyone know what these are and how to use 'em ?

I suspect the program's looking for HIMEM.SYS (XMS management) and EMM386.EXE (EMS management). In the latter case, it might actually be expecting to find a LIMM expansion board.

Now you're just talking gibberish. I know none of this stuff exists! Stop trying to confuse the poor boy!

LoL Seph you're funny. There are XMS and EMS memory adapters. In fact, one of the 'reputed' best Qbasic games ever 'Wetspot 2' uses EMS, which I also never got working. I was just wondering what it was and what it does, I'm sure someone out there knows something about it, although Glenn's input was helpful!

Well, EMS and XMS were Intel patches to his shitty memory organization an planning when released the 286. They released that 1 meg was superb for a 1978 computer, but that it was not so impressive in 1984. To give the 286 the ability to access up to 16 megs without losing compatibility, they introduced EMS, which uses a "window" in conventional memory that you can move around through those 16 megs.

With 386s XMS was introduced. You use HIMEM.SYS to controle it, and with EMM386.EXE you make your XMS look like EMS, so EMS based stuff also work.

To have your EMS games running... If you have windows 98 copy all the "OLDMSDOS" or "OLDDOS" CD directory contents inside your C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND and run MEMMAKER.EXE.

Couldn't he just use the:

Right click on the program
Click on the Memory Tab
Set XMS and EMS memory to "Auto"
Click "OK"

Ta-da! Works for me Tongue
