PPC 970 system specs leaked at Apple Store

Yeah, I probably wouldn't notice, as I have disabled that stupid feature anyway. That's a good idea... but only works in graphical logins.

I think the reason people like Linux, is because it's not one rich man running everything everyone hates that one man in power (caugh Bill Gates caugh) I think XP is a fine operating system, I never like apple's computers... but I've never done photo, or video editing on one.

Yeah, people like Linux because its free, open source and a Unix based operating system. But FreeBSD was around before Linux and fit all the above criteria, in fact the original AT&T Bell UNIX fits all the above criteria. Its just interesting that Linux is the one that has taken off and gained all the hype, Linus himself has attributted this to the fact that Linux has a cool name.

Don't get me wrong, I like and use Linux alot. But I also use a number of other operating systems, including a few Windows variants. Different operating systems have their strengths and weaknesses, no single operating system can provide the best solution for everything. Now that Linux is slowly pushing its way into the mainstream, while still retaining its hackers aura, people are starting to chuck its name around to appear more l33t.

Quote:How is that overkill? It's still going to be 0wned by the Athlon 64. Tongue

I'm not so sure about that, the PowerPC cpus are one of the best cpus i've ever seen. And x86 is one of the worst. AMD are very clever, but they're still working with an architecture some stoned hippies did back in the 70s.

I think the next generation processors, Intels Itanium-64 and Athlons 64bit processor are supposed to be legacy free. The information I have read about the Itanium said that it will be a true RISC processor with a completely redesigned core and instructions set, it will however provide compatibility with 32bit code (but not 8 or 16bit) by having hardware emulation of the old x86 instruction sets.

The Itanium has some very cool features for maximising throughput. It uses 'bundles' of three instructions which are guaranteed to be able to be executed independantly (nops are used if necessary) and three fetch/decode/execute units, so a maximamal effeciency it is executing three instructions in parallel. The only drawback is that they rely on the compiler (or programmer) to create and verify the bundles as being independant, so obviously a poor compiler/programmer can easily end up having one instruction and two nops per bundle.

Hopefully the x86 line will shrivel up and die soon, its a horrible architecture, especially when nice architectures like the PowerPC are floating around. One of the best and most flexible archtectures I have used is actually the MIPS, but I dont think they make them any more.

My girlfriend is a graphic designer, and she loves macs. I know of one project she was working on in photoshop that was so big and had so many layers and a very high resolution that it took half and hour to apply a filter.
That was with a top-of-the range mac 2 years ago, so no, I don't think its overkill.

Mainly I consider those PCvsMACs wars (and paraphernalia) quite stupid. Why PC users hate MACs and why MAC users hate PCs? Which machine is worse?

The answer is NONE. One machines are intended for some tasks, and the others for other tasks. MACs are designed for design/musical/video editing, and the are the best for such tasks. PCs were designed mainly for business apps (database and office stuff) and as powerful servers and/or LAN/WAN machines, and they are the best on that. Nowadays they are heavily introducted in the gaming world, but that's another story.

The main point with PCvsMACs wars is that PC users are accustomed to work with PCs and MACs are different, and vice-versa.

I've tried both and I can allegedly say that a PC isn't as good as a MAC for "photoshop"ing or "free-hand"ing. Given two machines of the same age, bought during the same week, with (comparatively) similar features, a big design in Free-Hand with lots of vectors could take 1 minute to render on the PC side and several seconds on the MAC side (and I've seen that: a friend of mine is designer and showed me the difference). In the other hand, I would never set an internet server on a MAC. Also PCs are better to kill aliens or to travel thru' ancient Tombs with that shooting bimbo Wink.

The main reason people like Linux much better over windz, is because people making Open Source programs and Linux mainly (except "some" people.. e.g. sco) do it for the fun and love of software, versus the windoz concept where they do it mainly for the money, not even caring about the quality of the software they design. I mean seriously WTF? Isn't billions of dollars in the bank enough to retire and stop from hurting people with windoz?

The money isn't the point here; but the GREED is. ...

I agree totally, but Windows is a good OS. And I really respect all the creators of the Linux OS, and programs to go with it.
