Most broadband companies don't let you run servers, I thought... or maybe that was just game servers. Dunno.

Considering that you need a broadband to decently host a server...a seperate broadband, rather...it's like $60 USD. Plus the computer. Plus the domain. Seriously - do long4net.

$60 USD??? Geez, are you getting ripped off or what?

You can get an old server-capable computer for $100 or even less second hand. And the domain you'll have to get regardless else you won't feel compelled to update (that's just Zack and my opinion). And you'll save in the long run, especially if you host other people (for a fee, even).

Zack, you do not need a $1000 computer to run a web server. You've been brainwashed by the spin doctors at microsoft Wink

Ive found free servers with 100MB free, no limits on filesize, and php support. (some ask you to pay for mysql)

And my latest game was 4.5MB, and the one after that will be larger. How many users do you know will be bothered to download 20-50 200KB files to play one game? yeah i thought so.

Store your games at file planet.com then, and then you get crappy qued downloads.

long4net won't let you host your own little server programs for small games or homemade chatservers/instant message servers or whatnot. oracle is right on with his advice for using an old computer for a server. It's exactly what I plan on doing when I buy a new computer.

Many broadband ISPs do not allow servers (they block port 80). If you have a dynamic IP, you run into problems there. Sure, you can always use no-ip.org and a different port, but that sucks imo. In addition, your upload bandwidth determines how many people can reasonably visit your site at once. You may have 768k down, but if you've only got 128k or 256k up, your site will seem sluggish.

And you'll find that an internet connection with a decent upload speed IS around $60/month. For that price you could get space on a rackmount with an OC3 connection...

And um, not to start another argument or anything, but web browsers ain't even been around for 15 years. Maybe the guy was running a BBS or something...

Oracle: Well, that's what most good broadbands go for here.

Well, I'm hosting with Long4net and they've never complained about me hosting games.

Define "hosting games". I don't think we're talking about quite the same thing.

No no, he means like uploading your own counterstrike server, but instead of it being for counterstrike for your own game etc, etc.

But you should be able to just write the thing in php/java and have it interact with each other instead of having c code running on the thing 24/7/
