Qb on xp?
#1
Hey guys,
I have read a post like this ages ago but now that the forum was hacked I dont think it exists and I forgot what the post said.
I have recently updated to win xp pro. Is there any way of running qb on it? I keep getting an error to do with a qb.pif file?
Thanks for any help

i just installed the new QB 7.1 (www.QBcafe.com/english/) i also had this problem. i kept getting an error that stated:

invalid startup directory, please check you pif file, choose 'close' to terminate the application

i found that i was clicking on the wrong Icon. although the icon was named "QB" it was only a shortcut to something invalid. Try using the file called "QBX" or "QBX.EXE" it worked for me, and i just did it today

If my memory serves me well, QB runs fine (but slow) on WinXP. The biggest problem it's the apparent lack of XMS/EMS on the DOS emulator. So, a possible solution for your problem is...

[talkingwitheerievoice,whiteeyesandmymindinblank]

Find the executable file using Windows Explorer. Right click on the file, and choose "Properties". Click the "Memory" tab. Set all of the values in the drop boxes to the highest value available. Make sure that the "Protected" and "Uses HMA" boxes are checked. Click "Apply" and then click "OK" to close the box.

Hope that this helps.

Oh. I almost forgot this: The WinXP DOS emulator runs considerably faster on full screen. (no eerie voice this time) Tongue

Thanks for the help, I will try it out when I get home.

BTW. I managed to get qbasic 1.1 working.

Cheers.

I think that there is a _default.pif file somewhere that holds default parameters to all DOS programs. I bet that setting there the memory options you won't have problems with any DOS programs you install/create.

I use 2000, so things I have to say only half-apply, but the only problems I've had with 2k involve problems with the lack of EMS. I haven't had any speed issues(QFAK runs at 80FPS, which is more than fast enough for me!), but the EMS thing is enough to make most qb games not work at all Sad

IBM did a far better job on the VDM concept.
